The River Thames has been the lifeblood of London since before Roman times. It is the city's raison d'etre and has been responsible for the growth of the city as a world trading centre. To look at the river today, one could easily forget that it was once one of the busiest ports in the world and that tens of thousands were employed along its banks. Chris Thurman has photographed the river for over forty years and has captured the changes along its banks, from the decline of shipping to the demolition of warehouses and the expansion of housing along the banks.
