When Daedalos murdered his student and nephew Talos it was to protect his position as the most innovative architect of his age. He must have foreseen a limit to new ideas and was in effect predicting the end of originality in architecture. More than three millennia later this number examines the obsession of the architect with innovation and the new. Today there are those in the fields of criticism, science and history who argue that there is nothing new to discover. They claim that today’s architect, like Harold Bloom’s poet is essentially a tragic figure or, to paraphrase Shelley “that architects of all ages contribute to one great architecture perpetually in progress.” But the work of creative architects today refutes any conclusion that the end of architecture is approaching.
