This classic study of Edward's reign was first published in 1990 (as The Reign of Edward III), and again as a hardback in 2000, and is now reissued as a small paperback with a shorter title, more black and white illustrations but without the colour plates. Although the text is little changed, it remains one of the few good studies of the king's life, his early years and the history of his reign. Arranged both chronologically (1327-1377) and thematically (The King, The Ministers, The Magnates, The Clergy, Provincial Society and the Gentry, Urban Society and the Merchants), the book sets Edward's reign firmly in its context and measures its success, or otherwise, for all levels of society.
